2020 Harley-Davidson® Low Rider® Overview

Nobody does the American cruiser quite like Harley-Davidson®, and the popular Low Rider® S is the brand at the pinnacle of its game. We have the 2020 model in stock here at Seacoast Harley-Davidson®, which is your local H-D® dealer serving Rochester Dover Hampton Exeter New Hampshire. You can also count on us for an in-house financing department that can help you get the perfect motorcycle loan for you, a service center that can provide the routine maintenance your Low Rider® S needs to last for many years to come and a parts department that will sell the perfect products to accessorize your ride. Because the Low Rider® is the quintessential American cruiser, it is often compared to the Boulevard C50 from Suzuki, which is widely regarded as the ultimate metric cruiser. In this article, we compare the 2020 Harley-Davidson® Low Rider® vs 2021 Suzuki Boulevard C50 and provide our own take on the discussion.

Harley-Davidson® Low Rider® S

The 2020 Harley-Davidson® Low Rider® S is an America cruiser, and the S indicates that it is part of the Softail family. The Softail suspension is sophisticated and designed to keep you comfortable no matter how long you cruise. It puts you in an upright riding position, has foot controls that are mid-mounted and has an integrated windscreen. The Low Rider® S comes standard with the Milwaukee-Eight® 114 V-Twin engine, which is currently the most powerful engine that comes standard with a Softail. That power is complemented with sport bike-inspired handling and agility. The Low Rider® S also boasts an amazing aesthetic that is inspired by the classic West Coast style but infused with modern elements. These include a blacked-out aesthetic as opposed to the more traditional chrome look.

Suzuki Boulevard C50

The 2021 Suzuki Boulevard C50 is regarded by many to be the ultimate metric cruiser or at least the prototypical one. Metric cruisers are built on the American cruiser template—classic style, torquey engine, low profile, feet placement and so forth—but made by a non-American brand. If you were not familiar with the concept of metric cruiser, you might look at this bike and assume it to be classic American. Suzuki has even opted for a chrome aesthetic. It pairs that with a candy red, which really makes the bike pop in a classic kind of way, but also a gray that is less exciting. With the C50, Suzuki has a similar goal as Harley-Davidson® in delivering a relaxed ride with comfort that will hold up.

Harley-Davidson® Low Rider® vs Suzuki Boulevard C50

One advantage that Harley-Davidson® has it that it makes multiple motorcycles in this space. The younger generation of motorcycle enthusiasts that are coming up absolutely favor the more modern blacked-out aesthetic, which is what the Low Rider® S caters to. But if you prefer the chrome, you have options like the Heritage Classic and the Softail Slim. You do not have options with the 2021 Suzuki Boulevard C50, and while we think it looks great, it does make you wonder who Suzuki is marketing this toward.

Aesthetics aside, the things that jumps out in comparing the 2020 Harley-Davidson® Low Rider® vs 2021 Suzuki Boulevard C50 are character, feel and sound. The American cruiser is an experience, and this is why even though they sometimes nail the aesthetic, metric cruisers often fall a bit flat. The feel of the Lower Rider S and the rumble of its engine are not matched by the Boulevard C50. The Harley-Davidson® model is also dripping with character. It strikes this wonderful balance between new and tradition, and the Boulevard C50 feels more like a perfunctory attempt to recreate a classic cruiser today.
